Building on the strong foundational skills taught and learned in Kindergarten is the essence of our Grade 1-3 program. While our curriculum for Grades 4-5 is carefully crafted to foster a love for learning, ensuring a solid foundation in core subjects such as English language Mathematics, Science, and various concepts. We follow a well-rounded approach that integrates hands-on activities, interactive discussions, and collaborative projects to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Language instruction in both English and Arabic continues to take centre stage in our primary program as it permeates their entire day.
We may begin Grade 1 with a quick review of letters, sounds and basic high frequency words but we quickly begin to extend and refine these skills as we move into more advanced phonemic and phonological instruction to enable our students to begin reading and writing on their own. Daily instruction and on-going practice help our students to read and write independently to attain the reading levels and writing competency to both understand and express their thinking.
As they move through grades 2 and 3, the students learn to read at a deeper level as they acquire the comprehension skills necessary to understand the meaning of the text. Articulating their thinking both orally and in writing is an integral part of this program. Cross-curricular assignments are introduced here as students learn to read and write a genre and format in language and then practice these skills and concepts in science and social studies. Likewise in Mathematics, the primary program continues to extend and refine the foundational skills learned in Kindergarten. Basic oral math facts are introduced and extended and refined as they move from Grade 1 to 3 along with operations, spatial awareness, measurement, basic patterning and algebra, and data management. Although these math strands do not change as students move through the grades, the outcomes students are expected to achieve do change as additional skills and concepts are added.
As students move into the late primary grades, they continue to internalize the fundamental literacy and numeracy skills needed for success. Through explicit and intentional instruction and practice, students at ABSK are provided opportunities to extend and refine the reading, writing, speaking and numeracy skills learned in grades 1-3.
In Grades 4-5 students acquire more advanced literacy skills through project work, oral presentations, and cross-curricular learning opportunities. They begin to think more critically and creatively as they interact with more complex text, are presented with more advanced concepts and solve real-life problems. They are expected to apply their previous knowledge and understanding to tackle new concepts and skills across the curriculum.
